Historical note
The Mennonite congregation at Tofield, Alberta was founded
in 1936 by recent immigratns from Russia. They began services in 1929
in homes and rented facilities. In 1937 they completed their own
meeting house. The congregation was originally known as Schoenwieser
Mennonite Gemeinde zu Tofield or the Schönsee Mennonite Church. In
1941 the membership was 96. The membership was 138 in 1947; in 1956 it
was 178. In 1960 the name changed to the Tofield Mennonite Church. In
1972 the membership was 142 and in 1990 it was 127; in 2000 it was 124.
The leaders of the congregation were: Cornelius Heidebrecht
(1931-1935), David Heidebrecht (1933-1956), Peter Regehr (1935-1960),
David Boese (1938-1994), Abe D. Heidebrecht (1940-1980), Gerhard Franz
(1941-1960), David Regehr (1943-1988), Abram Epp (1944-1960), Johann
Neufeld (1945-1974), A. Baergen (1958-1997), John Unrau (1975-1980),
Frank Baergen (1979-1997), Jacob Nickel (1981-1982), Eric Rempel
(1982-1989), George Schroeder (1988-1989), Merlin Stauffer (1990-1997),
Walt Braun (1998-1999), Bob Crosland (2002- ).
Scope and content note
This file contains bulletins (1975-2001), congregational
meeting minutes (1975-1987), congregational office holders (1975-1987),
annual reports (1975-1998), and constitution (1977). The records
pertain to the development of the Mennonite congregation Tofield,
Alberta after 1975. They document some of the leaders and participants
in the congregation.
