Mennonite Settlements
in Brazil and Uruguay (p. 205)
The first Mennonite settlers in Brazil
had emigrated from Moscow to Germany
in 1929. The German government made arrangements for them to settle in Brazil.
They arrived in Blumenau in 1930
and settled in a number of small villages farther west. They were joined by
refugees from Harbin, China
in 1934. The jungle proved to be almost uninhabitable and most of the settlers
relocated to the Curitiba area. The
settlements near Bage were established in 1949.
The Mennonites in Uruguay
came from Poland
after World War II. The El Ombo Colony was founded in 1959, the Gartental
Colony in 1951 and the Delta Colony in 1955.
