Schoenwiese (p. 45)
The village of Schoenwiese
was settled in 1797 by seventeen families who had come to Chortitza from Prussia
during the years 1793 to 1796. They were members of the Frisian
Mennonite Church.
The proximity to an urban market, a river harbour and after 1875 a railway
station, made it possible for profitable industries such as market gardens,
flour mills and farm machine manufacturing plants to develop.
The first aeroplane flown in Russia
was built in the two Hildebrandt factories in Schoenwiese and Chortitza. The
plane, HUP II, was designed, built and launched in 1909 by three Mennonite boys
aged seventeen to twenty, Kornelius Hildebrandt, Peter Unruh and Heinrich
Plenert.
